  • AndR album: Newbeams!

Former La Casan Andrew Heathwaite still has blog edit privileges.  Therefore, hi!

And also, he just made an album in the month of February!  What excitement!

There are some first steps here into a new style, exploring tuning, time and form in an electronic-pop medium.  Free to stream and download online:

Maybe good music to listen to while perusing the La Casa chicken picture archives?

  • Happy Holimalaise!

Contrary to what may have never crossed your mind, La Casa has not closed down for the holidays.  Sure, half of us are away in sunnier lands, with (for better or for worse) family obligations, but that leaves half of us here in town, a skeleton crew, suff’rin’ thru the holidays together with joy, good cheer, and sarcasm!

[[Insert picture of We La Casans Four, sitting around a kitchen table teeming with open bottles and gravied foodbits.]]

Erin, Ronna, Don, and your humbuggish narrator Andrew, had a fine few days of gray grump and psychedelic carnage, cheering on the snow and eating plate after plate of lentil-free leftovers.  Our special holiday companions?  Alcohol; recreational greenage; movies with subtitles; and, oh yes, gobs of greasy Holimalaise!

Wikepedia says, “Malaise (pronounced /məˈleɪz/, mal-aze) is a feeling of general discomfort or uneasiness, an ‘out of sorts’ feeling, often the first indication of an infection or other disease. Malaise is often defined in medicinal research as a ‘general feeling of being unwell’.”

Now, I speak for at least myself when I say this Xmas stuff is a crock!  We buy our children a hollow plastic miracle every year until they’re too jaded to buy it, then we sort of give up and let it linger, linger, linger.  But we don’t give up, damn it!  Somebody had a kid?  Great, let’s keep the lie alive!  “Yes, we love Xmastime in this family, don’t we?”

Combine that disgusted disillusionment with the shortest days of the year, ridiculous wastes of energy and resources (just for show), insulting pressure to buy just the right thing to show so-and-so how much you love them, and some narrow-minded Jesus-talk, and you’ve got yourself the bare essentials for a hefty serving of Holimalaise.

We’re even starting to get straight-up sick around here.  “I feel like my head is detached from my body,” said Erin a few minutes ago, before going back to bed.

[[Insert picture of We La Casans Four huddled together for warmth on the couch, floating in a sea of vomit and Holimalaise.]]

Ok, it hasn’t been as bleak as all that.  The food has been amazing.  On xmas itself, we had mashed potatoes, two kinds of mac ‘n’ cheese, breaded tofu, and pecan pie with bourbon sauce, all with some mighty fine vegan gravy.  Then, in celebration of Boxing Day (the day after xmas) we had five amazing artichokes with jungle juice!  The leftovers keep on piling up (and thank goodness, because the kitchen sink is offline for four days while the fresh caulk dries!).

[[Insert picture of Sophie eating a full plate of full-gravied Human Food (not to be confused with Human) at the kitchen table.]]

Other good things have come out of this gray week, such as winterized windows, a newly-caulked sink and this blog post.  (Except for the latter, I’ve had nothing to do with anything “good” around here, by the way.)  I look forward to the inevitable repopulating of the house after the new year, but in the meantime, I’m enjoying being on this particular strange island with my three winter-torn comrades.

  • ODDMUSIC II

As many of you know, Jacob and Andrew have a project going at the IMC called Oddmusic Urbana-Champaign:

Oddmusic U-C is building a library of unusual and usual musical instruments at the UC-IMC and facilitates events to connect experimental composition, microtonality, & instrument-building with non-sectarian radical social change.  We insist upon “music” as a type of “odd,” desirable when it avoids the same old society telling itself what it already knows.

Last month, we had a grand(e) opening, and this month an opportunity has come up to relocate our collection to a brand new space that’s cheaper, more commodious, brighter, and by at least one guest’s account, friendlier!  Last Sunday, with help from our friends Mary Ann(e), Don, Snow Leopard, and Mary Margaret, we successfully moved into our great new space.  We’re continuing to host office hours every Sunday evening from 7pm to 9:30, so feel free to come by this weekend and see what we’re about.  We’re now in the basement of the Independent Media Center (at Elm and Broadway in Urbana), room 21A, just down the hall from the Bike Project.

For more, see our blog and (or) sign up to be on the Oddmusic listserv.

  • The Moustache Dreams (of a moustache competition)

    Vodpod videos no longer available.

more about “Mustache Dreams on Vimeo“, posted with vodpod

Go Puppets! Theater, last Monday June 22, presented The Moustache Dreams or The Dash of the Stache at the annual Mike n’ Molly’s Moustache Competition in Champaign.  While the judges deliberated (selecting one moustache-bearer to hold the honor of supreme moustache & to host next year’s uproarious annual pageant), we four took the stage and performed for myriad adoring fans.  They had no idea what to expect from us, & neither did we from them.  Judging from the exuberant [drunken] cheers, it seemed to go over well!

Written & performed by Lorene Anderson & Michael Iscariot.  Additional performers: La Casans Andrew (on the left) & Jacob (center).

  • ODDMUSIC Urbana-Champaign: an invitation

Some of you have already heard about the weirdwonderfulness going on at the Independent Media Center these days. Jacob & Andrew have started renting a space & lovingly devoting it to ODDMUSIC. We are presently collecting musical oddities (such as microtonal midi controllers with hundreds of buttons, defretted guitars, and musical saws) to make available for public use. We envision, among many things, an instrument library, developing right here in Urbana.

I mention this now because a.) we just started a fancy new blog, & b.) we are hosting office hours every Sunday night this week from 7pm to whenever. Folks have come by to play on our strange instruments, talk oddmusic, & scheme for future musical provocations.

Do consider yourself invited! We plan to be there next Sunday (& times in between, of course, at odd hours), so please stop by & see what the heck. Oddmusic is located on the second floor of the IMC. We’ll leave the back door open for you – not the Bike Co-op door, but the next one over on the left. Walk up the stairs & follow the wafting tunes.

  • office hours

Jacob started keeping “office hours” a few weeks ago.  The hours themselves vary – sometimes he goes 6-8, sometimes 10-midnight, but he leaves his door open and openly welcome distraction.  Of course, he used to do that anyway, but now it looks intentional.

We miss Jacob!  In his absence, Maria and I are holding honorary office hours, I at his computer, blogging (obviously), and Maria on his bed poking around at his books and DVDs.  Anyone with something on their mind is welcome to stop by.

  • JAR band at the IMC

The JAR band opened a show at the Independent Media Center yesterday.

My poor excuse for a camera was there to insufficiently document the moment.

  • weekend update, permaculturist, beds, holes, lots of talk, and eggplant parmesan

There’s a lot going around the house these days. Here’s a quick recap of the weekend.
Transplanting sod to the front yard
Andrew and Ronna transplanted some of the sod that was leftover from new garden beds to a bare spot in the front yard. Sophie supervised.
Rob and Peter chat in the garden
Rob brought over a friend and longtime permaculture expert, Peter Bane, for a chat in the garden. It turns out the Peter grew up in Urbana and had lots of stories about home-scale food production in the area.
    Gretchen and eggplant parmesian
Gretchen brought over some eggplants and whipped up a two stellar pans of eggplant parmesan, one vegan. It was incredibly delicious.

There were many hours spent outside, digging, thinking, and moving.  Plans for the pond that we’re digging have taken off.  Now we’re thinking about ducks, fish, and waterfalls, although lots of research needs to be done still.  Garden excavations have continued, and Mac, Kannan, and JohnE have improved their beds with compost and more topsoil.  Ronna has been ‘potting-up’ some of the seedlings as its not yet time to move them outside.  All in all a good weekend.

  • AndR self-description

I, Andrew Heathwaite, moved to La Casa (& Urbana) in fall 2008 to attend School for Designing a Society.  I’ve never loved where I’m livin’ like I love this place.  Living here, I feel free to work on the thoughts & conversations I want to have.  Physical space allows for mental/spiritual space; intimate friendships allow for emotional needs fulfillment.

    “I”:

I work on music, language, writing, performance, with an intention to generate alternatives & variety in Everydaylife (when is Everyday?) & in the spaces between.  Most recently, I’ve enjoyed time (not “spent”) meditating, composing & performing music in 17 equal divisions of the octave (a juicy microtonal scale), writing poems, playing (with) policy, reading ancient Asian texts, digitizing Herbert Brün audio, participating in morning chats with Drew, walking Sophie, stocking shelves, digging holes, potluck hopping, & breathing.

I love it here, & intend to stay for a while.  Visit! Let’s talk Universe.
