   Thanks for posting this… the central idea of a Permaculture garden is that there are long-term perennials such as trees that lock in organic fertility and provide long term resources. The old willow was a source of beauty, shade, windbreak… but increasingly it had become a chicken roost, a source of constant maintenance, and kindling for the fire pit. It is only with the knowledge that many other trees have been planted (and will be planted) to provide other types of resources that the removal of the crown of this curly willow made any sense from a Permaculture perspective.

   I loved th tree, & I’m also happy to see us do something to benefit th garden. Out of death comes life. We’ve put something like five branches from th old willow into water so they’ll sprout roots & we can replant them. Maybe we can discourage people from driving thru th southwest part of th yard by planting a little forest.
